Become a Mentor

Please consider becoming a Kinship
Volunteer Mentor!

When considering becoming a Kinship Volunteer Mentor know that you will be making a big difference in the life of a child.  Since 1991, when we first opened our doors in Aitkin County, it became evident that there were many more children needing services that there were adult volunteers stepping forward to mentor.  This began our waiting list.

Can you do your part in shortening our waiting list?

How to Become a Mentor:

1.  Find out more about being a mentor by calling our office.

2.  Fill out an applicationClick here for application. All our prospective mentors are required to complete and sign a Kinship of Aitkin County application.  This application can be printed and then mailed to our office.  (This is a PDF file.)

3.  Participate in our screening process.  Within the application is an area that you will need to sign for Kinship to conduct a criminal background check on you.  Safety is always number one in our minds for children.  There will also be another area to provide three personal references.

4.  Schedule an Interview:  Once Kinship receives your application form, we begin the the screening process.  Once that is completed, we will be contacting you to schedule a personal interview.  This interview is an opportunity for our staff to get to know you better, which assists us in the matching process.  It is also an opportunity for you to ask questions and discuss the type of child you would like to mentor.

5.  The Fun Begins:  Once all the procedures are complete and you have been accepted as a mentor through the Kinship program, our staff will contact you with information about children waiting to be mentored that fits best with your interests.  When a child is chosen, a meeting date is set for you, the parent of the child and Kinship staff to discuss the best way to fill your new mentee's needs.  A match date is then set.  After the match is made, staff will have ongoing contact with the child and parent/guardian as well as the mentor.  Both parties are encouraged to call the Kinship office if any concerns arise during the course of the relationship.
